Venus Back Dimples are indentations on either side of the lower back.
Dimples of Venus or back dimples have an aesthetic appeal as they accentuate the elegant curve of a well-toned lower back. They are considered so alluring that they are named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love.
Although men can have back dimples, they are more common in women. Instead of being named after a Roman goddess, male back dimples are called dimples of Apollo, after the Roman sun god.
Read on to discover more about this attractive body feature.
What are the dimples of Venus?
Back dimples appear at the point where the pelvis and spinal cord meet. The indentations are created by ligaments that attach bone to skin.
In slender and toned individuals, the lack of subcutaneous fat allows this natural feature of the body to show through the skin of the lower back region, creating symmetrical dimples.
Is a sacral dimple the same as a Venus dimple?
Sacral dimples and Venus dimples are both found on the lower back. They are similar, but there is a difference between them.
A sacral dimple is a single indentation just above the buttocks, usually noticed in a newborn baby.
Most sacral dimples are insignificant, but sometimes, indentations like this can indicate a problem with the spinal cord or spinal canal.
A sacral dimple in a baby accompanied by a tuft of hair or a skin tag may need investigation from a healthcare provider as it could be caused by spina bifida occulta or tethered cord syndrome.
Venus back dimples occur on both sides of the spinal cord and are completely harmless.
Can I achieve Venus dimples without intervention?
Venus dimples are often genetic. If you haven’t been lucky enough to inherit back dimples, you won’t be able to create them yourself.
If you have been genetically blessed with your own dimples of Venus, you may be able to accentuate their appearance with exercise and managed weight loss.
Diet
If you naturally have Venus dimples, a healthy diet that reduces fat around the lower back region will make them more apparent.
Your lower back needs to be lean enough for the Venus dimples to be truly visible, and losing weight in a healthy way may help to reveal them.
Exercise
Toning the area around the lower back may also allow your dimples of Venus to shine.
To achieve this effect, you need to develop strong core muscles and focus on toning the stomach and the lower back.
A personal trainer can advise you on ways to ensure that your midsection is strong and toned enough to showcase your back dimples.
Liposuction
Liposuction effectively removes stubborn fat from the buttocks, thighs, stomach, back and waist.
Perhaps your body is holding onto fat around your buttocks despite your best efforts with diet and exercise. If this is the case, liposuction can remove pockets of subcutaneous fat, making your back dimples more visible.
Can liposuction be used to create Venus Dimples?
Advanced liposuction treatments that dissolve fat on the buttocks and waist can now be used to sculpt the body.
Liposculpture
Liposuction techniques are now so refined that rather than just removing fat, surgeons can sculpt a more toned body for patients with more control than in traditional methods.
Liposculpture can be used to target small areas, removing fat to improve the definition of a group of muscles on the shoulders, for example. Using a cannula to redistribute fat in the lower back region, it is now possible to create the appearance of back dimples in patients who have not inherited them.
At the Warwick Clinic, we offer a range of the most advanced liposuction techniques, including Vaser Liposuction, which combines traditional techniques with ultrasound, making the procedure less invasive and reducing recovery time.
We offer a range of other treatments to transform the face and body. Our full list of procedures is here.
